Road Trip Treat

From our front door to Indianapolis it is about 2 hours, give or take, depending on the traffic. There are many reasons for our family to venture to our capital city: the State Fair, Taekwondo tournaments, The Children's Museum, oh yeah, and the family we have living there. But for whatever reason we are on the road south, the one thing I know is always going to happen, no matter what time of day, no matter what time of year, Adam is going to stop on the way at the nearest White Castle for sliders and a sack of fries. He isn't a huge fan of fast food, but I think he would drive 50 miles out of his way to satisfy his craving for those tiny burgers! For as long as I can remember if we are headed in that direction, he gets this goofy grin on his face and I know a trip through the drive-thru is in our future. Yes, he has even made us stop at midnight so he could bring some home w/ him! (Not to mention tasting just one while they are "fresh". ) So you can imagine my excitement when I found a copycat version at Mommy's Kitchen! That Tina---she's a smart lady and knows just how to make me look like a genius to my man! I will admit, I've never been as big of a fan as Adam, but these I really liked! I think baking them is such a neat idea, b/c it really cuts down on the amount of grease, which was one reason I didn't enjoy the originals. He said these were "fantastic" and the closest thing to the "real deal" he's ever had. I'm so happy I can treat him anytime now, any day of the week; and save SO much gas money doing so!

White Castle Sliders
From Mommy's Kitchen
2 lbs. ground beef
1/2 c. dried onions (I found a small "value" bottle at Kroger for $1 and used the whole thing)
1/2 TBS Lawry's seasoning salt
6 slices American cheese
Slider Buns (I found them at Kroger) or Dinner Rolls
Pickles

Preheat oven to 400. In a 9x13 baking dish, spread onions evenly. Place the ground beef in dish, pressing evenly into one large patty. Sprinkle seasoning salt evenly over meat.  Bake for 20-30 minutes. Remove from oven and using paper towels, soak up extra grease off top. (I also had some on the bottom, so I carefully poured it out). Place cheese slices across the top and bake 5 minutes more until melted. Let stand 2 minutes and then cut into small squares to fit the size of your bun or roll. Remove from dish w/ a spatula and add a pickle slice to each one.

I've made these and they are fantastic! I am a White Castle girl! When we moved from Indiana to West Virginia a few years ago, it was one of the foods I missed most (along with Skyline). I was so happy when I found this recipe! I agree with your hubby... it's the next best thing to White Castle to be found!

P.S. Indy Children's Museum ROCKS!!! ;) esslyz

Yikes!! Sorry about the "esslyz" on that first post,.. total typo. :(

I love White Castle too. We always used to stop at the one in Anderson when we were headed south. None here in Michigan, so it's always the first place I want to eat when we go to Chicago or Wisconsin. I'd like to try your copycat version sometime, but my husband HATES them!

These look good Krista! Do you add the seasoned salt to the ground beef before putting it in the pan?

Krista said...

No. You press the meat into the baking dish and then sprinkle the seasoned salt on the top :)

And thanks for asking, b/c I realized it wasn't in the recipe. DUH!!! Lol I've added it into the directions.

Those look yummy. A dash of mushrooms could also add a bit of texture to the mix. Stopovers are always a part of any road trip!

Okay...I'm willing to try this recipe. I've seen so many White Castle copy-cat recipes that say to add liver (like a small bottle of liver baby food)...and I just didn't want to do it! This recipe sounds much better to me! Thanks!

Krista said...

Um, yeah no liver here! That's just wrong. I just saw another recipe today that added peanut butter. Interesting, but no. I don't enjoy the WC like my husband does, and this recipe is approved by him as a GREAT substitute at home. Says they are even closer than the ones you can buy in the freezer section!

Was wondering..if you can use dry onion soup mix instead of dried onions??! Feedback please

Hi Vanessa

I would not use the soup mix as it has other herbs, spices and flavoring that in my opinion would not taste right with this. You simply want the onion flavor and nothing extra.

Hi, sounds like a great recipe. I'm going to try it this coming week. I was wondering though about the buns. I know white castles are very soft...how would you recommend heating the bun so it doesn't come out toasted...without putting it in the microwave? Thank you so much!

Krista said...

What I do is simply place buns, still in package, but open, on top of my oven while the burgers bake. They are warmed perfectly without being hard. Hope this helps!

Good idea. Thanks!

Down South we call them Krystal and they have a flavor unlike any other fast food hamburger. You are making my mouth water!
