The name comes from the fact that the original pound cakes contained one pound each of butter, sugar, eggs, and flour. No leaveners were used other than the air whipped into the batter. In the days when many people couldn't read, this simple convention made it simple to remember recipes.

The cake was made with a pound of each of the ingredients (flour, butter, sugar & eggs) measured in English pounds. Interestingly 8 eggs = 1 lb. In England several kinds of dried fruits were also used. French style pound cake was 4quarters of the main ingredients with no fruit of any kind). Interesting to see all the cultural variations of this cake since some of the others introduce wine, chocolate or lemon juice, cream or sugar coating, and nuts.

Pound cake refers to a type of cake traditionally made with a pound of each of four ingredients: flour, butter, eggs, and sugar. The traditional recipe makes a cake much larger than most families can consume, and so the quantity is often changed to suit the size of the cake that is desired. As long as the ratio is preserved, the resulting cake will be identical to that using the traditional recipe. Hence, any cake made with a 1:1:1:1 ratio of flour, butter, eggs, and sugar is also called a pound cake, even if the quantity used is smaller or larger than an actual pound. ~ Wikipedia.
