I guess normally you wouldn't want someone described as a "weenie" invited to any party you were throwing, but my son Alex loves calling these "weenies", laughs every time he does, and it just makes me smile. The more refined name would be "cocktail sausages" and since I'm an adult, going on 31, that is what I'll go with, even though it's not as much fun! I've been making these for parties and family gatherings for years. Every time someone asks for the recipe and I get to the part about "cranberry sauce" he/she always does a double take. Believe me, I did the first time I saw the recipe too (which, by the way I can't remember where I got it from almost 10 years ago). But it's all about sweet and tangy at the same time, and since I've also seen meatball recipes that call for grape jelly in the recipe, I guess it's not such an "out there" idea. They are perfect for a party on the go too. I start mine on the stove top at home, transfer them to a Crock pot and they travel really well. I know the holiday parties are behind us, but before we know it, Super Bowl Sunday will be here and we'll all be looking for new ideas once again! So from weenie to another :-)
Cocktail Sausages
1 pkg. cocktail sausages (I use Hillshire Farms)
1 can jellied cranberry sauce
4 TBS brown sugar
2 TBS ketchup
2 TBS mustard
1 TBS lemon juice
In a large pot, heat cranberry sauce on medium heat. Whisk until smooth. Add sugar, ketchup, mustard and lemon juice. Stir to mix well. Add sausages and heat until sausages swell up. Transfer to Crock pot to keep warm. Serve w/ toothpicks for easy grabbing.

I love these! We actually had them at our wedding reception! haha :)
ReplyDeleteI make meatballs with the cranberry sauce and sometimes with the grape jelly. I've been wanting to try the weenies, but never got around to it. Maybe, like you said, for the Super Bowl!
ReplyDeleteyum! Thanks for linking up to the Tuesday Talent Show! I hope to see you again next week!
